There seems to be more environmental
practitioners working outside the environment industry than in
it (e.g., other industries, government).
83% of environment companies are
SMEs with 50 or fewer employees.
Employment is most in the protection
area, then promotion and research and then conservation of natural
resources.
|
12% of vacancies in 1999 were in
management while 88% were non-management, requiring a degree or
diploma.
A majority of companies hire contractors
and consultants.
Future demand is expected in computer
programmers, environmental co-ordinators, science and engineering
technologists, chemists and workers with environmental studies
backgrounds.
Number of women environmental practitioners
had grown to 25%.
Personal contacts is the most frequent
method of recruiting in the private sector.
Four of five most common areas of
upgrading needed were non-environment skills: written communications,
business skills, computers and verbal communications.
