Work in the New Economy

D. Labour Market Forecasting

One of the most frequently asked questions by those looking for work or planning a career change is: "What are the top jobs?" This is one of the most difficult questions to answer because it depends on the definition of top jobs.

As Table 7 shows, the list of top jobs is different depending on the criterion used.

  • Top jobs defined by growth in employment requirements (percentage) produces one list.
  • Top jobs defined by actual number of new job openings produces another.
  • Top jobs defined by earnings produces yet another.

A list of top jobs for women, could even be produced where the criteria might include earnings and projected growth, opportunity to work at home/work part time and a higher than average percentage of women in supervisory or management positions.

However, a list of top jobs defined by any of the above factors, should also include a consideration of the supply of workers for those jobs. A shortage or an oversupply of qualified and available workers will affect the competitiveness of the job market for a given occupation.
