D. Finding LMI for Emerging OccupationsHow can a person find labour market information about emerging fields that are not yet coded and captured by government occupational classification systems, such as new media or Internet security, organic farming or bioethics? This obviously takes more investigation and analysis. Depending on availability, either the public library or the Internet can be good starting places. Both may have reviews of newspaper and magazine articles on the subject while the Internet often has additional information from associations, sector councils and specialists in the field who write for the Internet and educational institutions. The World of Work: Overview and Trends in the Job Futures package specifically calls attention to sectors and occupations that are completely new or already in existence but undergoing significant changes or experiencing high growth. A brief description of a few emerging occupations, such as Web master or cyberjournalist are given as examples, and there is a table of emerging sectors and sample occupations organized by level of education. This can be a good starting point for choosing emerging occupations to further investigate. The following is an example of information on an emerging field - new media - that can be gleaned from an investigation that includes the library, newspapers, personal interviews and information on the Internet. |
