Labour Market Information for Career Decision Making

Industry Profiles

Over 80 industry profiles are produced by Industry Canada. Topics range from Aerospace to Telehealth. While human resource issues are included, the primary focus is on the competitiveness of Canadian industry and technological factors that influence the industry. The profiles can be found on the Strategis Web site under Business Information by Sector http://strategis.ic.gc.ca.

Electronic Job Banks

Job Bank http://jobbank.gc.ca/Intro_en.aspx.
Job Bank is an electronic listing of jobs, work or business opportunities provided by employers from everywhere across Canada. This information is provided on electronic Job Bank kiosks located at local Human Resource Centres of Canada, at selected public locations, and in some provincial organizations and ministries.

Electronic Labour Exchange (ELE) http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/en/hip/odi/
documents/bridgingTheGap/chap4.shtml#7

The Electronic Labour Exchange (ELE) is Canada's only automatic, skills-based matching service. Using a checklist based on NOC and the Essential Skills, employers create a profile of the position they need filled, identifying the skills, education and experience they are looking for. Work seekers create similar profiles, using a skills checklist to describe their skills, education and experience. The Electronic Labour Exchange uses this information to make an exact match. Employers and work seekers choose an occupation from a pick list. The system then generates a checklist that lets employers select the educational and skills requirements of the job, and lets work seekers select the educational and skill sets that best describe their qualifications. Employers and work seekers use the same list to define skills, education and experience, so the results are much more accurate than those of systems that rely on free text "key word" searches or other matching methods.

AVRES
For those who are unable to access the Internet, a telephone service, AVRES, exists that provides a listing of locally selected jobs. AVRES is available 24 hours a day with daily updates. Access is free; however, long distance charges may apply. For information on this service contact your local Human Resource Centre of Canada. The phone number will be in the blue pages of the phone book, under government listings (except in Quebec).
